What’s in a Name

To blog or not to blog? I have read a bunch of different blogs over the years and several times thought about starting my own to share my experiences, crafts, DIY ideas, and all sorts of other “stuff”, but I guess I always went back to “who would want to read that?” After a bit of prodding from my friendly neighbor, I have decided to go ahead and start one. But where to start??? How about the name of my very small, somewhat seasonally succesful little in-home business, Joyful Mama Designs? Let’s face it, most moms out there are happy to be moms and may or may not be joyful at any given moment of any given day. That is the nature of being a mom and I’m totally and completely with you on that. I guess when I picked the name, I wasn’t necessarily thinking of it as the name as a whole, but rather the parts.

Joyful- yup, most days I can pretty much consider myself that. I am happy to be alive. I am happily married. I am happy to be a mother. I am happy to have supportive and fun family and friends to “hang” with. But most of all, I am happy to have my health. I am happy to be able to do the creative things with my hands–sewing, crocheting, drawing, writing–that I wasn’t always sure that I would be able to do.

When I was 3, I was diagnosed with Polyarticular Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. I have been in and out of remission all my life (at least all of it that I can remember) and the primary joints that were affected were my hands, wrists, and knees. Here is a picture of me (and our beautiful velvet couch) from when I was almost 5. If you look carefully at my hands, you can see the large lump in my wrist and the swelling in my knuckles.

As you can imagine, hands and wrists are very used in crocheting and even in sewing, so I am constantly grateful for my health. That I found natural remedies–homeopathic and energy–in my mid-20’s and have since been symptom free (now going on 12 years) makes me extremely “joyful”.  So that’s where the “Joyful” part came from.

Mama-well, I’m the mother of 2 children. Jacob, 7, and Sophia, 5. They are the center of my world and most of what I do (if not all) has something to do with them. If it weren’t for them, I would probably still be teaching and would have never had the time or thought to start making hats and dresses and whatever else I have made/sold over the past few years.

Designs- hmmm, honestly, “joyful mama” was taken 🙂 But I rarely use a pattern unless I have found a really awesome pattern, and then you will always see me credit that person for their really awesome pattern. I’m sure I will post some in the future for your enjoyment. So basically, I design and create most of my own items.

So that’s it. That’s me in a nutshell. There are other parts of me, but let’s face it, this first blog of mine is already too long. So welcome to my blog. Happy reading. And I hope that you stop by on a regular basis. I promise from now on, it will be less about me, more about the things that I make and do 🙂
